Monastery of the Blessed Virgin Mary Muharraq

The Beautiful Monastery The Holy Family came to it during its journey in Egypt. Deir El-Muharraq complex is situated on the Nile River, south of Qusiyah, in Asyut Governorate in Upper Egypt. It is south of Greater Cairo. This site is one of the largest and most significant Egyptian monasteries. The Holy Family visited this place during their journey from north to south, and it later became the ancient Church of the Virgin within the monastery. Additionally, it is a crucial historical monument in Assiut Governorate. It is called "Deir Al-Muharraq" and is located approximately 15 km southwest of Al-Qusiyah city.

The monastery was established in the late 4th century AD and covered an area of approximately 20 acres. It consisted of six primary churches, including the ancient "Church of the Virgin" which originated in the 1st century AD. This church is known for being the place where the Holy Family resided.

Deir Al-Muharraq

-The reason for naming the monastery:
There are various explanations for the name Al-Muharraq. One reason is that the agricultural basin in the monastery had an abundance of herbs and mountain weeds. To eliminate them, they were burned with fire, leading to the name Muharraq.

This is the place that the Holy Family stayed for six months and five days.

Monastery of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Yusef  Al-Najjar, Virgin Mary, and Jesus Christ lived in this place inside the ancient church that became a church in the first century AD, and it became special, because Jesus Christ blessed it and lived in it when he was a child. This place is special, and the longest period that the Holy Family lived in a place was in this place.
