The temple was built in the 26th Dynasty (664-525 BC) by Pharaoh Amasis II. It was a major pilgrimage site for ancient Egyptians, who came to consult the Oracle of Amun. The Oracle was said to be able to predict the future, and its pronouncements were considered to be divinely inspired.

The visit of Alexander the Great was considered one of the most important events that made the temple famous, in 331 BC, until he was crowned the son of Amun, so that the Macedonian leader could get closer to the Egyptians, since they were known to be linked to their belief. Alexander also asked the temple priests to predict the fate of his upcoming military campaigns, and whether he would rule the world or not. Their answer was yes, but not for long.

The Temple of the Oracle

Some legends are associated with the Temple of Amun, the most famous of which is the story of the lost army of Cambyses, consisting of fifty thousand warriors sent by the Persian king Cambyses in 525 BC. To demolish the temple to prove to the Egyptians and Greeks the corruption of their faith and belief regarding the predictions associated with the temple. The strange thing is that Cambyses' army was completely lost after he left heading to the Siwa Oasis, and historical records state that the army was buried under the sand of the desert after it faced violent winds.
