Mustafa Kamel Tombs

Mostafa Kamel Necropolis can be found on El-Moaskar El-Romani Street in Rushdie Zone. It consists of four underground tombs that were carved out of rock and date back to the 3rd and 2nd century BC. These tombs are known for their vibrant colors and relief inscriptions, which depict the daily life of the deceased. Among the tombs, Tomb I stands out as the most fascinating. A staircase leads to small burial chambers, surrounded by an open courtyard with an altar facing the southern wall. The courtyard is adorned with Doric columns and sphinxes. Behind the altar, there are three doorways that lead to a vestibule. Additionally, the tomb had a cistern for water storage.

The Mostafa Kamel tombs were constructed in 250 BC. They can be found in the northeastern part of the Mostafa Kamel barracks in Alexandria, Egypt's second-largest city, has many reasons to be famous. Alexandria . These tombs belong to the Ptolemaic period. In 1934 AD, the cemetery was accidentally discovered. At that time, there were settlements covering an area the size of a football field. Through excavations and the use of equipment, four graves were uncovered, including two underground cemeteries.

The cemetery you will discover is the finest one that exists. Initially, you will come across an entrance, followed by a staircase that leads to a courtyard. In the center of the courtyard, there is an offering table and a series of circular columns attached to the wall. You will discover 3 bedrooms on the left side. In room 2, there is a beautifully carved well serving as a water source. Additionally, there is a water basin on the wall connected to the pottery pipes and cabinets of the archaeological tombs of Mostafa Kamel. There are tiny rooms labeled 5, 6, and 7 on the wall adorned with red and yellow drawings and writings. Additionally, there are more rooms numbered 8, 9, 10, and 11.

You can spot the exclusive Persian drawings above the entrance of Mostafa Kamel's tombs. These drawings depict three knights riding horses, with two women offering gifts. The knights and horses are painted in red, while the ladies' clothes are in yellow. This cemetery is specifically dedicated to the burial of Ayles Iluzis, who followed the worship of the Greek goddess Demeter.

Tomb no.2: The tomb begins with a rock-cut corridor that leads to the tomb's courtyard. From there, there are several side rooms, some of which contain loculi. One room has 2 mastabas, another has an offering table, one has a sarcophagus, and there is also a room with a well. Tomb no.3: Due to its poor state of preservation, it is difficult to determine the exact shape of this tomb. Over time, this tomb has undergone multiple restorations. Tomb no.4: This tomb is in a deteriorated condition, and inside, two sarcophagi were discovered.
